Fed Rate Hike Odds Rise After Warsh’s Jackson Hole Speech
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh spoke at the annual Jackson Hole symposium, and the market was shocked to discover that interest rates might actually go up again. Warsh reiterated his commitment to operating without forward guidance, essentially telling investors they will have to figure things out without the Fed holding their hand. He emphasized that stubborn price pressures could force policy to tighten further, rather than providing the rate cuts Wall Street so desperately wants.
Why It Matters: The era of predictable monetary easing appears to be over. Without the Fed promising future rate cuts, the market may be left to panic over every single inflation metric. This reality validates our recent tactical bond portfolio revamp. We intentionally moved away from long duration exposure and passive cash proxies. By emphasizing intermediate credit alongside short duration high yield instruments, we aim to capture income without being fully exposed to the price sensitivity that comes with endless rate hike speculation.
Consumer Balance Sheets Under Pressure: Rising Delinquencies in Auto and Housing
Recent reports highlight that a growing share of American households are struggling to make timely payments on auto loans and mortgages. After years of inflation and sustained high interest rates, debt servicing burdens have eroded disposable income. This is predictably triggering an uptick in delinquencies across middle income borrowers.
Why It Matters: This appears to be tangible proof of the widening split between Wall Street and Main Street. Mega cap tech companies might be weathering higher capital costs, but the actual consumer foundation is cracking. Rising delinquencies confirm why throwing money blindly into index funds might be a risky bet right now. We continue to focus our equity exposure on discrete growth companies with clean balance sheets and resilient cash flow, strictly avoiding sectors that rely on tapped out consumers borrowing more money.
